The struggle for Black Artists to be seen in Dallas is immense. The stories of the city’s first Black exhibitions, first Black-owned galleries, trailblazing Black artists, and groundbreaking Black administrators of the visual arts community are virtually undocumented and generally unknown.  I discovered this truth while working on the “togetHER” documentary, and felt compelled to right this wrong.

Daughter of Dallas is a community project I spearheaded to invite artists and activists of color to co-create the story of Dallas through our unique lenses. My goal is to preserve the critical histories of artists and advocates who have significantly impacted the arts movement in Dallas and to bring forth a more inclusive and comprehensive portrayal of our city.  The suite of interviews I conducted for the documentary project will also be available through the Irma McClaurin Black Feminist Archive at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
